BOOMING CAMBRIDGE RANKED AMONG EUROPE’S TOP 10 ‘CITIES OF THE FUTURE’

Booming Cambridge continues to rack up the accolades after a well respected magazine named it among Europe's top 10 'cities of the future'. Cambridge has defied its relatively small size to make the annual shortlist by fDi Intelligence, alongside mega cities across the continent.Backed by the Financial Times, fDi Intelligence monitors economic growth and investment opportunities across Europe, and pinpoints the best places for people and companies to invest their money. And Cambridge is arguably the best city in Europe pound-for-pound, with a top 10 ranking overall and second place in the 'small cities' category."Cambridge's international appeal continues to grow, with a highly skilled workforce attracting global brands to set up and grow in our area, such as AstraZeneca and Illumina," said business chief Neil Darwin, chief executive of the Greater Cambridge Greater Peterborough local enterprise partnership (LEP)."These results help to reinforce the area's international appeal, and highlight the reasons why our city is so in demand."Among the top issues highlighted by the LEP for Cambridge's success story include a thriving technology cluster, the world-class University of Cambridge, and the city's close proximity to Stansted Airport and London. While Cambridge ranks especially well in its economic potential and openness to business, it also makes the grade for its 'human capital and lifestyle'.This measures things like educational attainment, the number and ratio of students, a city's ability to attract and retain talent, and local life expectancy. This is the only area where Cambridge is trumped by its Varsity partner Oxford, though.Cambridge had the seventh highest amount of patents issues of any city in Europe last year, and by far and away the most per resident. The only cities where more patents were issues were Paris, Munich, London, Eindhoven, Stuttgart and Berlin. To give some context, Cambridge – resident population of around 120,000 – had around 5,000 patents registered last year.In the same time period, London – population 8.6 million – saw some 8,000 patents issued. The wider Eastern region also found itself recognised on the back of Cambridge's success, ranking as Europe's 12th most prosperous future region. Our local enterprise partnership is also highlighted, ranked as third out of 39 nationally.TABLESTOP EUROPEAN CITIES OF THE FUTURE
