SWS law firm is a legal adviser on an investment of strategic importance for Poland’s economy and safety

20 May 2020

At the end of April 2020 there was a handover of the construction site of SWS-supported project of strategic importance for the Polish maritime economy and inland shipping, called “Modernisation of Świnoujście-Szczecin waterway”. The scope of the project includes dredging the waterway to 12.5 metres on a section of ca. 62 km, with its simultaneous widening to 100 metres and, among other things, redevelopment of banks, dredging and widening of ship rotators and construction of two artificial islands on the Szczecin Lagoon.

The main aim of the project in question is to radically improve the quality of cargo handling in the port, which significantly increase the competitiveness of the ports in the towns of Szczecin and Świnoujście and companies which operate in their area. The maximum admissible loaded draught of vessels will increase for cruisers, container ships and bulk carriers. What is more, the islands created in course of the project will, eventually, become a habitat for avifauna and a diverse natural habitat.

The Law Firm’s client is the Maritime Authority in Szczecin who runs the project of total value of EUR 326,000,000 – significantly co-financed from the EU funds as part of the Operational Programme Infrastructure and Environment. The whole project will be completed in 2022.
