PROBONO FOR THE ENVIROMENT, partner Carlos Murillo, from Mexican Firm DiazIgareda, assisted and rendered legal support to one of Mexico’s largest deep-sea aquaculture group in negotiating the terms for the adaption and transportation to the Sea of Cortez of a custom-made oceanic aquarium, and providing technical advice, to US and Mexican government agencies, conservation NGO’s and academic institutions engaged in the identification and conservation actions towards the vaquita marina at the upper Gulf of California. The vaquita is a small porpoise that according to the “Vaquita Marina Conservation Action Plan 2016-2018” is one of the most critically endangered cetaceans in the world. In late 2016, the vaquita population was estimated to have less than 30 individuals and is facing an imminent risk of extinction.
